Throughout South African cities it has been found that the transport sector is by far the largest energy user in cities and in some cases is responsible for over 60% of total energy demand. Due to the 'dirty' nature of South African electricity supply, the contribution of the transport sector to greenhouse gas emissions is not quite so high but is still one of the largest contributers to greenhouse gas emissions and there is a desperate need to address this. The following two articles outline the impacts of the transport secotr on climate change as well as the role of mitigation in the transport sector.
